Here is the what and how.
I was focusing my search on the RAHN sir name. I knew a few basic facts, such as:
- My grandfather came over from Germany when he was 1 or 2 years old
- He settled in upstate New York
- Arrived sometime in the late 19th century
- His parents are buried in New York state also
Given these facts, I started digging. Of course, being of German heritage, I was hesitant of spending any money, so I have not paid for any official records. Of course, my results show the lack of thoroghness that a little money would provide. But, I am not finished yet. I am of the opinion that this will be a lifelong project for me and I am in no particular hurry.
One thing I found out in a hurry is that there is a good amount of people with the sir name RAHN that came to the US. Another thing, it is pretty hard to find information from Germany.
